Although YATRIDES has perused the BIBLE since the fifties, he has during the same period studied all the available scientific works and pondering over the meaning of human destiny. Is man the fruit of an organized creation or the product of an unwitting one? One can say that his canvases have a religious inspiration, given that, as a painter, he confronts SATAN. But he confronts GOD as well, or rather he confronts all the possible hypotheses built up about him. The BIBLE is the battleground.

What YATRIDES feels is that truth exists only through creation. For him, to create is to experience all the potential hypotheses, to feel thrilled by all the possibilities and to express all of that. For him, the canvas is a battlefield. If there are contradictions, he does not seek to silence them but depicts them rather (ibid. "Yatridès and His Century", p.219).

"Slices of Watermelon in the Form of a Cross" (1966) is a truly singular canvas. The painter is himself amazed by it; is he really the author of this great "satanic" production; candlestick, sacrilegious arrangement of watermelon slices, a vulgar woman in a provocative state of undress, sulphurous skies, without light nor hope?

"Apostasie" (1973) is also sacrilegious in its way. The vertical Slab, from which hung the mortal remains of CHRIST,
is now transversed by a horizontal SLAB, fixed, yet at the same time mobile. Anonymous, concealed inside his vehicle,
somebody is watching this open-air performance.
Still from 1973, the "Biblical Bread" is a masterpiece of balance and harmony in a space where the laws of perspective and light are defied. The flight lines are unable to meet anywhere, but open up the pathway of the infinite. Light streams from all parts of the painting, sculpting elements and objects whose mass has already been achieved by the uncompromising graphics, though without casting any shadow.

"This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me" (Luke 22,19).

"Remain vigilant" (1973). This warning echoes the words addressed by the author of the Apocalypse to the Sardinian church: "Be vigilant! Strengthen what remains, which is near unto death, for I have not found your deeds complete in the eyes of my God". (Apocalypse 3,2)

"The New Scrolls" (1977). On the wide surface that formerly bore the Biblical Bread are displayed, synchronus with the celestial clouds, the revelation of the Holy Scriptures. The cherries are there still to evoke the Blood of the Saviour.

"The Orange and The Infinite" (1977). An illuminated variation on the same theme.
He comes! Where? In Jesus' arms! The cloud that stretches away towards the infinite seems to take up the words of J.S. BACH 's  Recital of The Passion according to St MATTHEW. The partly consumed orange promises Salvation to the faithful abandoned at the time of Golgotha.

"The Androgyne, Son of Man" (1978).

The dead CHRIST lies in the most pitiful of positions, destroyed by the fearsome Slab on which he has been crucified. This Slab is the canvas of the universe in which is locked away all that the cosmos has engendered since the beginning of Time. It therefore contains the writings of the prophets, the destiny of The One who, following their example is called the Son of man.

Taking the Twelve aside, JESUS tells them: "Now we are going up to Jerusalem and all that has been written by the prophets about the Son of man will be fulfilled. For he will be given over to the Gentiles, they will mock him, insult him and spit on him; after having flogged him, they will kill him, and on the third day, he will rise again." But the disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them and they knew not what Jesus meant". (Luke 18, 31-34).

Why an androgynous CHRIST ?  In order that women, as well as men, can know themselves in Him, explains YATRIDES.

"Fisher of Men" (1978).

"As he walked beside the sea of Galilee, he saw SIMON and ANDREW, the brother of SIMON, casting their nets into the lake; they were fishermen. JESUSsaid to them: "Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men". Leaving their nets, they followed him". (Mark 1, 16-18)
